Some of you may know me as a musician and worship leader, but my passion for the last several years has been art and art education. I opened Riverwood Studio out of my home in 2016 as I moved into my post-homeschooling phase of life. Since then, I’ve taught art and drama classes and camps to hundreds of children and adults, I’ve completed many watercolor commissions, and have illustrated two children’s books.
One of my recent creative endeavors has been to collaborate with a team at Calvary to create worship art for the sanctuary. Here’s how that unfolded: a team came together to brainstorm ways to enhance the worship experience at Calvary. We agreed that I would create 6 pour paint canvases that could be reused throughout the year as backgrounds for wooden phrases, which would be cut by Josh Laack. Our fabulous facility guys, Brad and Joel, would help display and light them.
I had never even tried pour painting, but after much research on YouTube, I was ready to give it a try. What fun I had choosing colors, mixing up the paint formula, and blasting worship music! If you click the image below, you can watch a short video of the process. You will probably see these canvases again and again (or maybe I’ll make more) with new words that coordinate with the current sermon series.
