My name is Joanna Vaughan, and I am the first grade teacher at Schaeffer Academy. Spring in first grade is always an exciting time! Just like the bugs outside, first graders find so much joy in the longer days and warmer temps! While my idea of a good bug is a dead one, first graders love to collect any and all bugs. Enter science. We take our magnifying glasses outside so we can get a closer look at the intricate design that God used to create such a diverse population. Once we are back in the classroom, we recreate what we saw as we looked through the magnifying glasses. We create a grassy scene with lots of small bugs, and we zoom in on one bug through a paper magnifying glass to really show off the details. Want to try it with your little bug at home? Here are the basics:
- Start by creating a grassy scene.
- Add some small bugs of your choice.
- Make a magnifying glass out of black paper.
- Add a slightly smaller circle of white paper to the top of it.
- Draw a bigger bug than those already on your paper on the white circle.
- Then, shade the background to match the scene behind the magnifying glass.
This craft can be a springboard to your exploration of God’s world during this wonderful season!
