Today my daughters helped pick a fun handprint flag craft for the 4th of July! Although it isn’t the original craft we had planned it turned out to be a better craft, because we actually had fun!
I am not sure if you can relate but sometimes I have what seem like “FUN” ideas for crafts but they end up being a little more complicated or stressful than intended. But since our goal in crafting today is to have fun, this craft is pretty simple and hopefully won’t take too much time from being outside on these summer days!
My daughters tend to like crafts where we use paint or crayons and where we can get a little MESSY! I think it seems to take the pressure off the craft being PERFECT and it is something they really seem to enjoy.
So today’s handprint flag craft is a little bit messy but I hope still fun for everyone involved!
Let’s get started on making these festive handprint flags for the 4th of July!
Step One: Print off the Handprint Flag Sheet
To start this easy handprint flag craft print off the handprint flag. Print the flag on 8.5”x11” paper.
If you are going to be painting the flag with watercolor use a thicker cardstock paper.
Step 2: Paint the stripes of the handprint flag
The next step is to paint the stripes of your handprint flag. You can use acrylic, watercolor, or even use ribbon or lace for the stripes.
One of my daughters loves acrylic painting so she chose to use acrylic paint and my other daughter used watercolor paints.
Tip: Don’t worry about the stripes being painted perfectly. Actually these paintings look pretty cool when you can see part of the brush strokes in them. So just let your kiddo have fun and do the best they can with painting.
Step 3: Cover your child’s hand completely with blue paint.
Whether you chose to use acrylic or watercolor paint for your stripes, you are probably going to want to use acrylic paint for the handprint.
Taking a foam brush cover your child’s hand completely with the blue paint. For smaller children it helps to have another person holding your child’s hand.(Ask me how I know!)
Press the hand down in the center of the box on the top of your flag picture.
Try to not allow the hand to move around too much, but again don’t worry about the handprint being perfect. With some white showing through more of the details of the handprint show through! And the bits of white take the place of the stars on your flag.
Use soap and water to take the paint off of your child’s hand. And now just wait for your painting to dry!
Once your painting is dry. You can definitely also embellish the flag with glitter, buttons or other fun extras if you want to give it a little personal touch!
But we hope you enjoyed today’s handprint flag craft and that most of all you and your child have a FUN memory to keep with you!
Take care and Happy Crafting!
