In “Taste and See,” the author Margaret Feinberg invites us to discover that our relationship with God is far more delicious than we ever imagined. After reading this book, I have a new understanding and appreciation for the verse, “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8).
Through reading the author’s firsthand experiences—harvesting olives and figs, fishing in Israel, and navigating a salt mine—I learned how food is a language through which God speaks to our hearts. Meals shared and flavors savored can be opportunities to experience God’s provision, creativity, and love in tangible ways. Verses I previously passed over (like almost any involving a fig tree) I now understand as everyday miracles and teaching moments Jesus lovingly provided his audience—lessons I can also appreciate now that I have context for growing and picking from a fig tree, or in learning the value of homemade bread in Jesus’ day.
This book reminds us that when we slow down to truly taste our food—whether it’s the complex flavors of olive oil, the richness of bread, or the satisfaction of a shared feast—we’re reminded that God desires to be intimately involved in even the most ordinary moments of our lives.
After reading this book and experiencing a delicious meal and discussion during one of Calvary Women’s Summer Gatherings, I’ve been convicted to take time to pause and remember that the God who created every flavor and texture is inviting me into deeper communion with Him. On the surface, I’ve learned how much my children like fish as I’ve tried to serve it weekly since our book discussion. But I’ve also discovered that a prayer of gratitude over God’s creativity and provision during meal prep, followed by a shared meal, can be a celebration of His goodness that we can literally taste and see!
